Downtown North Historic District (Hartford, Connecticut)

The Downtown North Historic District is a historic district in Hartford, Connecticut. The area was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.〔 It is a predominantly residential area located around Main Street and High Street north of I-84 and south of the Amtrak railroad tracks. There are 28 contributing buildings in the district that represent "Mid-19th Century Revival" and "Late Victorian" styles of architecture in the district.〔 The 28 contributing buildings in the district are brick and brownstone buildings built in the late 19th century and early 20th century, including houses, apartments, a school, a church, a warehouse, shops, and a hotel. The Italianate Isham Terry House and the Queen Anne-style Arthur G. Pomeroy House, both of which are listed separately on the National Register, are included in the district. The 130-ft Keney Tower, a landmark said to be Hartford's only freestanding tower, is an unusual element in the district. It was built in 1898 to a design by Charles C. Haight of New York City. Most structures in the district were designed by local architects.〔(New Listings on the National Register of Historic Places ), Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation, undated〕〔HPA Walking Tours, ( Hartford Preservation Alliance Newsletter ), March 2005, page 4〕
William G. Allen is one architect who contributed to the design of one or more structures in the district.〔
